    There is a bigger and bigger push occurring in the world of nurseries, pushing them to provide a more and more enriching environment for children’s early development, which in part leads towards them being a school in a way. They can be more than just the place parents leave their kids to be monitored while they’re off at work; they can provide an enriching environment for those children too, where they get positive reinforcement from adults, an opportunity to interact with children of their age, to play, and ultimately to learn.

    Early age education can be conducted in a pretty non-structured manner, and kind of needs to be due to their lack of attention span and difficulty with following structure (not that that can’t be taught at the same time). It can be a great place for them to learn the rudiments of reading, writing, maths and sciences. There are plenty of games which can help with this, but the involvement of adults can be a massive benefit to.

    This desire to improve nurseries into something which can be a real positive for children is clearly not without merit, but it does mean that nursing staff are having to be more engaged in managing their charges, which can also mean more stringent qualification standards, such as degrees in child care.

  • Understanding Educational Technology

    One thing has become increasingly clear over the last couple of decades, which is that the role of technology in teaching and education at large is increasing in importance, and is likely to continue to do so. The new technology which is being used to enhance teaching has been shown to be quite effective, while, unfortunately, those teachers who aren’t particularly technically able are at risk of being left behind while these changes are occurring.

    This can be shown quite well by looking at new teachers, who are both younger and therefore better able to use technology (although, admittedly, that is a bit of a stereotype) and can also benefit from it being included in their teacher training and qualification courses, and at older teachers, who are less able to benefit from it because they haven’t received this training and are generally less capable with technology.

    Additional training for teachers who’ve missed out on previous training is therefore essential in this regard. Teacher training days are a great opportunity for teachers to have some basic training in some of the technology that is being used today, and most of this technology is designed to be used easily, so this should be sufficient for the most part. Getting started right now is also likely to improve the chances of teachers being able to keep up with continued developments.

     

  • Improving Teacher Effectiveness

    Teacher effectiveness, while not the only important factor in improving education, still plays an important role. Improving it is something which every education department, in every country, has attempted to deal with at one time or another, but due to a number of reasons, most countries have yet to be successful. Both due to a lack of political will, a lack of investment, and misplaced aims, a number of policies which have been put into practice have fallen well short of the mark, and Pasi Sahlberg believes he understands why.

    Pasi Sahlberg is partially responsible for the educational reforms undertaken in his home country of Finland, which saw a massive turnaround in their educational system, pushing them from a middle tier country in quality of education listings all the way to being a top competitor. Since producing these great policy changes, he has gone on to become an author and consultant for governments who want to see the same occur in their own countries.

    In a report he wrote about the USA education system, he indicated a number of issues with the quality of education, but disagrees with the methods currently in use to combat them. Most importantly, he argues, is that monitoring the teacher’s effectiveness in the role after they’ve already gotten approval is the wrong way to do it, and teacher effectiveness should be improved by implementing more stringent requirements on their entry into the profession as well as greater rewards for being a teacher.

  • Is Teacher Effectiveness the Only Important Metric for Education Policy?

    Teacher effectiveness is a judgement made on how effective teachers are at their job. Thanks to some complex statistical analysis, we have been able to find out exactly how much the results of students in education is influenced by the quality of their teachers, such as with examinations of standardised tests.

    Teacher effectiveness is championed by a lot of education reformers as the area of education policy which should be targeted and focussed upon for improvement, but if you examine the totality of what statistics of education results show, then you can see how other areas hold as much or more influence. Take child poverty as an example; this brings with a whole host of problems which ultimately become a teachers responsibility, and while a good teacher can overcome some of these issues, it is well outside of anybody’s capabilities to do this reliably and on mass.

    If you look at the examples set by some of the most widely acclaimed education departments, then you can see a trend beyond simply managing and improving upon teacher effectiveness. Finland for instance; uses a number of public policies to ensure that children aren’t too disadvantaged, and rather than placing the focus on teachers and their individual efforts (like in teacher reviews) they focus on reviewing the efforts of schools as a whole, viewing the efforts of individuals with the understanding that they are part of a team.

  • How Early Should Sex Education Begin

    There is no doubt that the cat is out of the bag regarding sex. Children are exposed to sexually charged marketing material made for adults on a daily basis by watching TV, and the ready access to more explicit materials which can be found online are also a daily concern.

    It elicits some interesting questions, therefore, about how early sex education should begin, and what exactly should be the aim of it. These questions recently rose to prominence in the UK, with discussions on whether sex education should begin during primary school. As children are already starting to get online at this age, with social media accounts, and with the advertisements on TV often being sexually charged, there is now mounting evidence that this might be the best option.

    A lot of education forums and organisations are fully supportive of lowering the age at which students are introduced to sex at schools, but the government has so far held off agreeing to change policy.

    Nursery and childcare is something which gets neglected a lot in discussions about how we can improve the education of young people and give them a better starting point.     Writing out your work history needs to be done professionally as well, and while you’re allowed to omit your bad moments in previous work, it is very important that you don’t over embellish your history. Not only is it dishonest, but it also looks dishonest, likely inspiring the person assessing your CV to look deeper into things, which could lose you opportunities in this job and in future applications to other ones as well.

    So, you write about your professional highlights and work experience, the complications you’ve encountered and how you overcame them, and most importantly your professional accreditations, licenses and qualifications – which are an added validator useful for your potential employer.

    Depending upon the seniority of your position, you could be expected to extrapolate even further, with your CV ultimately reaching up to or above 10 pages in length. For more junior roles it isn’t really expected to provide a CV in excess of 5 pages, and for people just starting out a couple of pages is more than enough.

    The aspects of a job application remain mostly the same no matter what role/job you’re applying to, in the education sector or out. They need to include a summary statement, which should describe who you are as a person and what motivates you inside of the workplace. After this, you need to include your work history, and finally any special skills which you have, especially those which might be of value to your potential employer.

    When you write out your summary statement, being professional is a must. This doesn’t mean that you can’t indicate that you’re a fun person to work with, but it does mean that the focus needs to be on your “modus operandi”, your work ethic, and potentially things like what you’d like to accomplish in the role your applying to, and your profession in general. For teachers this means expressing an enthusiasm for educating and in improving your skills to better teach your students.

     

  • Setting Up An After-School Program

    As a teacher, finding enough time during the day to teach everybody can be challenging, particularly when it comes to giving everybody precisely what they need in order to succeed. Some students can also be more interested in learning about the subject matter than others, which is where an after-school program can become useful. They give teachers the opportunity to extrapolate further on what was discussed in class, so that the more engaged students can begin to further their expertise above and beyond what the standard lesson period allows.

    Most educational bodies permit a fair amount of wiggle room for teachers to set up such a program, as they’ve proven to be immensely helpful in improving results. They not only allow teachers to have a more one-on-one interaction with their students but also allows students to excel in a system where they don’t have much opportunity to do so.
